Why make this visible?

In the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel they drop crumbs behind them so they do not lose the way home. Anyone who follows the trail knows exactly where they have been. On the internet, apps and websites often leave digital crumbs behind without you noticing: what you click, what you view and how long you stay. When the mist lifts, someone can follow the trail back to you. In this demo the castle in the valley is your laptop or phone.

Many websites send those crumbs to ad networks. This demo absolutely does not. It is a kitchen-table trick on your own screen — to discover together how the internet works behind the scenes.
