In de aanloop naar mijn vakantie lees ik graag boeken die zich afspelen in het land waar ik van plan ben heen te gaan. Als inspiratie voor de route, maar ook uit interesse in de cultuur en literatuur van het land dat ik ga bezoeken. Als dat voor jou ook geldt, dan is deze lijst voor jou.
Ik zal de lijst regelmatig updaten met nieuwe interessante boeken van Chinese auteurs en andere boeken die zich in China afspelen. Onder de gerangschikte lijst met sterwaardering vind je de boeken met Nederlandse of Engelse vertaling die ik zelf nog graag wil lezen.

Cixin Liu - Het drielichamenprobleem (#1)
Een intrigerende science fiction trilogie die wetenschap en Chinese cultuur en geschiedenis integreert. Ik gaf #1 slechts drie sterren, maar de vervolgdelen zijn meer sterren waard.
Het is 1967. Ye Wenjie moet toezien hoe de Rode Garde haar vader doodslaat tijdens de Chinese Culturele Revolutie. Deze moord zal niet alleen haar leven tekenen, maar ook de toekomst van de hele mensheid. Veertig jaar later wordt de nanotechnoloog Wang Miao gevraagd om een geheimzinnige reeks van zelfmoorden onder wetenschappers te onderzoeken. Een mooi verhaal dat zorgt voor een aangename leeservaring.
Yang Fei wordt geboren in een rijdende trein en opgevoed door een wisselwachter. Wanneer hij op zijn 41ste overlijdt, is er geen geld voor een graf. Daardoor is hij gedoemd tot rusteloos rondzwerven in het hiernamaals. Hij ontmoet de doden uit zijn eigen leven, zoals zijn vader en zijn ex-vrouw, maar ook de slachtoffers van het moderne China: de zelfmoordenaars, orgaanverkopers, onschuldig terdoodveroordeelden. De reis van Yang Fei brengt de diepgewortelde absurditeiten in de ziel van de Chinese natie naar boven.

Mo Yan - Kikkers
Een verhelderend verhaal dat licht werpt op de gevolgen van nationaal beleid. Niet per se het meest meeslepende verhaal.
Een scherpe en humoristische kijk op het Chinese éénkindbeleid, vanuit het perspectief van een gynaecologe Voet Wan, bijgenaamd Kikkervisje, schrijft een boek over zijn tante, een bekende gynaecologe. Ze is aanvankelijk de heldin van het dorp, maar wordt gezien als een duivelin wanneer ze actief gaat meewerken aan de éénkindpolitiek en regelmatig mannen steriliseert en zwangere vrouwen tegen hun zin aborteert. Rondom haar kleurrijke maar ook angstaanjagende persoon ontvouwt zich de geschiedenis van de familie en de vrouwen in het dorp. Om de tragedie van het leven en lot van tante duidelijk te maken schrijft Kikkervisje een grotesk toneelstuk.

Sheng Keyi - Death Fugue
Een dystopische satire met een rokkenjager als hoofdpersoon. Interessant vanwege de metaforen, maar zorgde niet voor veel leesplezier.
In a large square in the centre of Beiping, the capital of Dayang, a huge tower of excrement appears one day, causing unease in the population, and ultimately widespread civil unrest. The protest, in which poets play an important part, is put down violently.
Haunted by the violence, and by his failure to support his girlfriend Qizi, who is one of the protest leaders, Yuan Mengliu gives up poetry in favour of medicine, and the antiseptic environment of the operating theatre.
But every year he travels in search of Qizi, and on one of these trips, caught in a storm, he wakes to find himself in a perfect society called Swan Valley. In this utopia, as he soon discovers, impulse and feeling are completely controlled, and every aspect of life regulated for the good of the nation, with terrible consequences.
Xiaolu Guo - Beknopt woordenboek voor geliefden
Communicatie blijkt erg moeilijk voor Xiao Changhong, een jonge Chinese vrouw die in Londen een jaar Engels komt leren. De stad is angstaanjagend, om maar niet te spreken van de taal. Het Chinees kent geen tijden, dus hoe moet ze de gecompliceerdheid van de grammatica begrijpen, laat staan de nuances van de woorden zoals die in haar Chinees-Engelse woordenboek staan? Nadat Z – zoals Xiao zichzelf noemt omdat niemand haar naam kan uitspreken – een onschuldige uitnodiging om ‘te doen alsof ze thuis is’ accepteert, woont ze plotseling samen met haar nieuwe geliefde. Ze besluit dat het tijd wordt om haar eigen woordenboek te schrijven; een beknopt woordenboek voor geliefden. Maar terwijl Xiao langzamerhand zichzelf, haar eigen (seksuele) gevoelens en de taal begint te begrijpen, is het nog maar de vraag of de liefde de culturele tegenstellingen tussen Oost en West zal overleven.
Beknopt woordenboek voor geliefden is een onweerstaanbare en gewaagde roman over wat er verloren gaat in vertaling. Vol humor en verdriet, verbijstering en verlangen naar het gevoel ergens bij te horen, is Xiaolu Guo’s roman een prachtig boek over de zoektocht van een vrouw naar haar eigen identiteit.

Qiu Xiaolong - Dood van een Rode Heldin
Shanghai is in 1990 een stad die aarzelt tussen communisme en kapitalisme. Qui Xiaolong toont in Dood van een rode heldin het dagelijks leven in deze wereldstad zonder daarbij de vaart van zijn razend spannende thriller te verminderen.
Inspecteur Chen van de politie in Shanghai onderzoekt de moord op Guan Hongying. Als modelarbeidster is zij een politiek voorbeeld. In haar woning vindt Chen echter burgerlijk-decadente opmaakspulletjes en erotische foto’s. Het is een pikante zaak, die tot in de hoogste politieke kringen voert. Chen loopt bij het onderzoek zelf levensgevaarlijke risico’s.

Yan Ge - Strange Beasts of China
